What is Temozolomide ?
Temozolomide is a medicine containing the active substance temozolomide. It is available as white capsules (5, 20, 100, 140, 180 and 250 mg).
What is Temozolomide used for?
Temozolomide is an anticancer medicine. It is used to treat malignant glioma (brain tumor) in the following groups of patients:
• Adults with newly diagnosed glioblastoma multiforme (aggressive brain tumor). Temozolomide Teva is first used with radiotherapy and then alone;
• adults and children aged three years and older with malignant glioma, such as glioblastoma multiforme or anaplastic astrocytoma, when the tumor is recurrent or worsened after standard treatment. Temozolomide Teva is used alone in these patients.
Medicinal product subject to medical prescription.
How is Temozolomide used?
Treatment with Temozolomide should be prescribed by a doctor who has experience in the treatment of brain tumors.
The dose of Temozolomide Teva depends on the body surface (calculated based on the height and weight of the patient) and ranges from 75 to 200 mg per square meter once a day. The dose and the number of doses depend on the type of tumor being treated, whether the patient was previously treated, whether Temozolomide Teva is used alone or with other treatments, and the patient's response to treatment. Temozolomide Teva is taken without food.
Patients may also take dopaminergic medication before taking Temozolomide Teva. Temozolomide Teva should be used with caution in patients with severe liver or kidney problems.
How does Temozolomide work?
The active substance in Temozolomide Teva, temozolomide, belongs to a group of anticancer medicines called alkylating agents. In the body, temozolomide is converted to another compound called MTIC. MTIC binds to the DNA of the cells when they are replicated, thus stopping cell division. As a result, cancer cells can not divide and this slows the growth of tumors.
