What is Advantan Ointment and what is it used for
Advantan ointment is an anti-inflammatory drug (corticosteroid) for use on the skin. It suppresses inflammatory and allergic skin reactions and relieves symptoms caused by skin problems such as redness (erythema), thickening of the skin, dullness of the skin, fluid retention (edema), itching and other complaints (burning or pain).
Advantan ointment is used to treat endogenous eczema (atopic dermatitis, neurodermatitis), eczema in children, contact eczema, degenerative, dyshydrotic, numeral eczema or unclassified eczema.
Advantan is available in two different dosage forms, which are of great importance for its therapeutic effect.

2. What you need to know before using Advantan Ointment
Do not use Advantan Ointment:

if you are allergic to methylprednisolone aceponate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
if you suffer from tuberculosis or syphilis in the treatment area, viral diseases (eg, measles / chicken pox, herpes), rosacea, periodic dermatitis, ulcers, acne vulgaris, atrophic skin diseases or after-skin reactions in the treated area;
bacterial and fungal diseases of the skin.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Advantan Ointment:

If your doctor tells you that your skin condition is accompanied by a bacterial or fungal infection. Additional specific therapy is needed;
If you apply Advantan ointment on your face, you should avoid eye contact;
If you are using Advantan Ointment, you should avoid contact with deep open wounds and mucous membranes;
If you suffer from glaucoma, tell your doctor;
Local skin infections may be exacerbated by topical glucocorticoid treatment.
Glucocorticoids should only be used at the lowest possible dose, especially in children, and only for as long as is absolutely necessary to achieve and maintain the desired therapeutic effect.
It is known from the systemic administration of corticoids that glaucoma may develop with the use of topical corticoids (eg, after a high dose or prolonged use, occlusive dressings, or the application of skin around the eyes).
The prolonged use of topical corticosteroids on vast areas of the body, and especially in occlusion, significantly increases the risk of side effects. Diapers, as well as intertriginal areas, can create occlusive conditions.
No impairment of adrenal function in children was observed when Advantan 0.1% ointment was applied over a large area (40-90% of the skin surface) with non-exclusive treatment. When treating large areas of the skin, the duration of treatment should be as short as possible and the possibility of absorption or systemic effect cannot be completely ruled out.

Children and adolescents
Advantane ointment should not be used under occlusive conditions. Keep in mind that diapers can create occlusive conditions.

Other medicines and Advantan ointment
Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

Pregnancy
There are no adequate data from the use of Advantan ointment in pregnant women.
If you are pregnant, your doctor will decide whether to prescribe Advantan Ointment, so please inform him or her. As a general rule, topical products containing corticosteroids should not be administered during the first three months of pregnancy. A number of epidemiological studies suggest that there may be an increased risk of oral clefts among newborns from women who have been treated with glucocorticoids during the first trimester of pregnancy.
Particular treatment of large areas, prolonged use or occlusive dressings should be avoided.

Breastfeeding
It is unknown whether methylprednisolone aceponate is excreted in human milk. It is unknown whether locally administered Advantan ointment can lead to systemic release of methylprednisolone aceponate to detectable amounts in human breast milk.
If you are breast-feeding, you should not apply Advantan ointment on your breast. Your doctor will decide whether to prescribe Advantan ointment if you are breast-feeding, so you should inform him or her about it. The treatment of large areas, prolonged administration or occlusive dressings should be avoided during lactation.

Fertility
No information is available on the effect of methylprednisolone aceponate on fertility.

Driving and using machines
Advantan ointment does not affect the ability to drive and use machines.
