What Tizanidine is and what it is used for

Tizanidine belongs to a group of medicines called skeletal muscle relaxants.
Your medicine is used to relieve stiffness and restricted muscle movements that may be the result of multiple sclerosis, damage or a disease of the spinal cord.

2. What you need to know before taking Tizanidine

Do not take Tizanidine

if you are allergic to tizanidine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
if you have severe liver failure;
if you are taking medicines such as fluvoxamine (for the treatment of depression) or ciprofloxacin (an antibiotic) (see also “Other medicines and Tizanidine” below).
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Tizanidine-Teva:

if you have kidney problems;
if you have heart problems such as coronary artery disease;
if you have liver problems.
Other medicines and Tizanidine-Teva
Tizanidine-Teva should not be taken with fluvoxamine (for the treatment of depression) or ciprofloxacin (an antibiotic) (see “Do not take Tizanidine”)

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.

other medicines used to treat heart rhythm disorders such as amiodarone, mexiletine or propafenone;
cimetidine (for digestive problems and peptic ulcer of the gastrointestinal tract);
certain antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones such as enoxacin, pefloxacin or norfloxacin;
rofecoxib (analgesic);
means of preventing pregnancy. You may need a lower dose of tizanidine if you are taking such medicines;
ticlopidine (prevents blood clotting);
any medicines for treating high blood pressure, including diuretics ("drainage tablets");
beta-blockers such as atenolol, propranolol;
digoxin (used to treat congestive heart failure and heart rhythm disorders);
some sedatives (sleeping pills or medicines for anxiety), e.g. temazepam;
any other medicines that, when taken with tizanidine, may be related to heart rhythm; consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Tizanidine-Teva with food, drink and alcohol
Tizanidine-Teva can be taken independently of food. Alcohol can increase its sedative effect. It is recommended that you do not drink alcohol while taking tizanidine.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Tizanidine is not recommended during pregnancy or lactation. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor for advice before using this medicine.

Driving and using machines
Tizanidine-Teva may cause drowsiness or dizziness (see section 4 “Possible side effects”). Alcohol and sedatives can increase this effect. If you feel dizzy, do not drive or use machines.
Tizanidine-Teva contains lactose

If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to some sugars, consult your doctor before taking this product.

3. How to take Tizanidine

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

The usual dosing instructions are listed below:
Adults
Your doctor will usually start your treatment with a 2 mg dose, which will gradually increase. The dose should not be increased more than once every 3-4 days. When the dose is increased, your doctor will advise you to distribute the dose up to 3 or 4 times a day.

The recommended daily dose is between 12 and 24 mg. The maximum daily dose is 36 mg.

Elderly patients
Your doctor will decide whether you should take Tizanidine-Teva.

Use in children and adolescents
Tizanidine-Teva is not recommended for use in children and adolescents.

Renal impairment
Treatment should be started at a dose of 2 mg once daily. Your doctor will advise you on how to increase the dose.

Application method
Tizanidine-Teva is for oral use. The tablets should be swallowed with a glass of water.

The action line is only to facilitate breakage if you find it difficult to swallow the entire tablet.

If you take more Tizanidine than you should
If you (or someone else) swallows a large amount of pills at one time, or you think a child has swallowed these pills, call your nearest hospital or doctor immediately.

Overdose can cause nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure, delayed or irregular heartbeat, dizziness, narrowing of the pupils, difficulty breathing, coma, anxiety or drowsiness.

If you forget to take Tizanidine
If you forget to take one or more of your tablets, make sure you take the usual amount of tablets at the time set for your next intake. Do not take extra tablets.

If you stop taking Tizanidin
Do not stop taking tizanidine unless your doctor has advised you. Tizanidine treatment should be discontinued gradually, especially if you have taken a high dose, unless your doctor has advised you otherwise. Sudden discontinuation of treatment can cause effects such as increased heart rate and high blood pressure.

If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

4. Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The following adverse reactions have been reported with an approximate frequency of:

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness;
decrease in blood pressure;
increased blood pressure when treatment is stopped abruptly;
dry mouth, nausea, stomach upset;
increase or decrease of heart rate.
Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people):

hallucinations;
sleep disorders, including difficulty falling asleep;
allergic reactions (itching, rash);
changes in liver function - blood tests may be needed to control it;
muscle weakness.
Very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people):

inflammation of the liver (hepatitis) or liver failure that can lead to yellowing of the eyes or skin and / or darkening of the urine. If this happens, consult your doctor immediately.
With unknown frequency (frequency estimation cannot be made):

allergic reactions;
itching;
stomachache;
vomiting;
obscure speech;
irregular heart rhythm;
headache, abnormal movements;
difficulty in focusing vision;
loss of appetite;
anxiety.

How to store Tizanidine

Keep out of the reach and sight of children. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton. Store below 30 ° C.

Do not dispose of medicines in sewage or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines you no longer use. These measures will help to protect the environment.

6. Contents of the pack and other information

What Tizanidine contains

The active ingredient is tizanidine. Each tablet contains 2 or 4 mg of tizanidine (such as tizanidine hydrochloride).
The other ingredients are lactose, anhydrous; microcrystalline cellulose; stearic acid and silica colloidal anhydrous.
What Tizanidine looks like and contents of the pack
Tizanidine 2 mg tablets: white to off-white, biconvex 6 mm diameter round tablets, with a concave embossed "T2" on one side of the tablet and a dash on the other.

Tizanidine 4mg tablets: white to off-white, biconvex round tablets of 9 mm diameter, concave embossed "T4" on one side of the tablet, and dividing lines into quarters on the other.

2 mg tablets are available in blister packs of 15, 20, 30, 50, 100, 120 and 500. 4 mg tablets are available in blister packs of 20, 30, 50, 100, 120, 200 and 500. Not all types of packaging may be marketed.
